Beautiful Brookings Oregon

The Chetco River and the sport boat basin.

Brookings Oregon:  Nestled on the southernmost Oregon Coast, at the heart of America's Wild Rivers Coast, between the breathtaking scenery of the Oregon Coastal Range and the Pacific Ocean, the community of Brookings-Harbor Oregon offers an incomparable quality of life.

Just six miles north of the California border, Brookings has a unique climate, often referred to as the “banana belt” of the Oregon Coast.  Now admittedly, I have never actually seen bananas growing in the Brookings area, but there are many plant varieties that seem to thrive in Brookings that struggle elsewhere in the world, Brookings is also touted as the home of winter flowers.  We will talk about that later.

There are three main routes into the Brookings-Harbor area, highway 101, private airplane and by boat.
Most visitors arrive in the area via highway 101, a few fly their small airplanes into Brookings’ airport and some come by sea, usually ducking into the Port of Brookings-Harbor as a stopover on a longer journey or as a safe port in a storm.

The first thing that draws the eye, particularly for visitors from the inland areas, is the coastline and the ocean.  There is something awesome about that vast expanse of water and how it interfaces with land.  This interaction offers endless variety, from calming and serene waves washing up on a sandy beach to the tremendous power of huge waves, driven by winter storms, smashing into the coastline.

As expected, the summer months find our beaches more populated than during the winter.  It is common, in the summer, to see groups of people relaxing in their beach chairs around a driftwood fire enjoying a spectacular sunset, and the more adventurous playing in the surf, making a go of boogie boards or the occasional surf board.  The more dedicated surfers prefer the winter months to surf, with its larger, more aggressive waves.
Winter months find the area wet but usually well above freezing with many sunny, clear days to enjoy the area or a walk on the beach.
During the summer, when the rest of the country is sweltering, Brookings-Harbor averages a pleasant 65-70 degrees.  For those who live here and pine for more heat, a short drive up the Checto River provides them with warmer temperatures, often 80-90 degrees, just right for playing in the river.

Average rain-fall of 80 inches per year, leaves the area green and lush.  Brookings is a wonderful place to live, vacation or just stop by for a visit.

The term “Brookings-Harbor” can often be confusing and many who are new to the area assume the term refers to the “Harbor” in “Brookings.  In fact there are two different communities, separated by the Chetco River.  Brookings is located on the north side of the Chetco River while the unincorporated community of Harbor is on the south side. Brookings-Harbor is used when speaking of both communities rather than just Brookings or Harbor.
